This talk is about the AV2 video codec architecture, its performance, and the timeline for its finalization. The presentation is done on behalf of the Alliance for Open Media's Codec Working Group, which I am honored to lead as its co-chair since the AV2 video codec inception in 2020. AV2 is the next generation video codec, and is a result of the AOMedia Codec Working Group research and careful standardization process during the last five years.
Now, when the AV2 development is close to the finish line, you can have a glimpse into this codec architecture and the main coding tools that helped to achieve about 30% lower bitrate for the same quality compared to AV1, when measured by objective quality metrics, such as PSNR and VMAF.
The slides of the presentation are available here.

The talk explains AV1 film grain synthesis (FGS) and the recently finalized AOMedia Film Grain Synthesis 1 (AFGS1) specification, which enables use of the AV1-style film grain synthesis with other video codecs by specifying AOMedia-defined ITU-T.35 metadata carrying the FGS parameters.
The slides of the presentation are available here.

The first part of the talk focuses on AV1 video codec rollout at Netflix, including visual quality aspects, and demonstrates benefits of using this codec for delivery of Netflix content in VoD. The second part of the talk offers a glimpse into the research conducted by Alliance for Open Media on video compression beyond AV1. It presents the status of the research and shows performance of its AOMedia Video Model (AVM) software compared to the state of the art.

The talk discusses recent advances in video codec standards and reasons why the traditional block-based architecture is still widely used by standard development organizations. It also takes a closer look into two video compression tools: film grain synthesis, which is a part of the AV1 video codec, and a deblocking filter used in the AOMedia Video Model (AVM), the codebase used by the Alliance for Open Media in its research on video compression beyond AV1.

Participating in a Streaming Media Connect panel on video codecs. The panel discusses how you decide which codec(s) make sense for what company and application. This panel provides a fast-paced walk-through of performance, implementation status, and deployment for various video codecs, such as AV1, HEVC, VP9, EVC, or LCEVC.
